The value of the average car built for export has doubled in the past decade, from £10,200 in 2004 to £21,900 in 2014, The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) said in its Motor Industry Facts 2015 report.
The total number built for export in 2014 was 1,195,196 (down 0.5% year-on-year), compared to 332,952 cars which were built for domestic consumption.

Over half (53.1%) of the cars built for export were for the EU. China was the biggest non-EU export market, followed by the US and Russia.

There were 2,476,435 cars sold in the UK in 2014, up 9.3%, according to the SMMT. Of this number, 47.6% were for private companies, 47.6% were for fleet and 4.8% were for businesses. In the private sector the Ford Fiesta was the most popular model, while the Ford Focus was the most popular fleet car in the country in 2014.
There were 7,190,125 used car transactions in 2014. The largest segment was the 10+ year old segment, which accounted for 33.5% of the market, while the 7-10 year old segment made up 26.9% of the market.

The SMMT also looked at how much more efficient cars have become. Since 1990, UK, nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide (NOx) emissions from passenger cars have fallen by 81%, it claimed.
Over the past decade, according to the SMMT, new car CO2 emissions have fallen by 26.4%.
