The used market for commercial 4x4s is
far less fashion-driven than that seen for the ‘urban’ 4x4s. If you
need the pulling power or sure-footedness of a proper off-roader
then you have to invest in a Land Rover, Free Lander, Range Rover,
Grand Cherokee or Shogun according to your budget.
Of all the car sectors affected by
the economic downturn in 2008, few fell harder or faster than the
4×4 sector. Values reached a low point last July when several
months of high fuel costs, combined with the stuttering economy and
uncertainty over proposed Vehicle Excise Duty and the so-called
Showroom Tax saw average values fall by over £2,000 to £6,723.
However, as they fell, so have they
risen. According to BCA, average values for 4x4s now are actually
ahead of those recorded before the credit crunch began. And for
used ‘working’ 4x4s demand has remained steady, because these
vehicles are not bought on a whim – they have a job to do.
Genuine commercial 4x4s are pretty
thin in the marketplace and demand is generally high for those that
are available. There are also hobbyist buyers who enjoy putting
these vehicles through their paces over rough terrain at the
weekends – these buyers are often less concerned about cosmetic
condition, and will more often look at performance, traction and
hill-climbing abilities.
While the consumer market will want a
range of metallic finishes and lots of chrome, commercial 4x4s
generally look better in workmanlike or utilitarian colour schemes,
such as olive, sand, orange, yellow or white. Specification is
important but rather than alloys and leather, buyers will look for
such features as winches, roof-racking, bull-bars, snorkel kits and
spotlights. Make sure the spare wheel is in place, particularly if
it is exterior-mounted on the rear-hatch.
Depending on what the new owner has
in mind, performance and torque could be an issue. Diesels are
always favoured, but low-mileage petrol examples will find a ready
home.

By GlobalDataBuyers like power and
functionality, utilitarian colours, exterior add-ons, and a full
service history, but dislike incomplete and poorly presented
examples, no documents and very high mileage.
