Japanese automaker Mazda recorded sales of 8,576 cars in March, a 40% increase on figures from the same month in 2013.

According to the manufacturer, positive March figures helped boost UK sales for the financial year ended on 31 March to 34,500, up 35% compared to the previous financial year.

Sales in Q1 2014 were also buoyed, registering over 12,500 units sold and earning Mazda a market share of 11.8%.

The company said the figures put it "well on track" to exceed 36,000 vehicles sold this year, and added that 66% of its sales were attributable to retail and 34% to fleet purchasers, compared to the industry-wide average of 58% retail.

In the UK, Mazda says it expects to sell a further 5,000 units in 2014, repeating the success of 2013, when sales grew to 31,200 from 26,100 the previous year.
