Jürgen Stackman is to become chairman of Seat, the Spanish brand under the Volkswagen Group umbrella, replacing James Muir who will move to a senior management position at VW.

Stackman held a series of marketing, sales and manufacturing roles at Ford in both Germany and the UK from 1989 until 2010, when he joined the sales and marketing division of VW subsidiary Škoda. He has been head of marketing for the Group and VW Passenger Cars since September 2012.

Muir also began at Ford, where he also held sales and marketing positions from 1987 to 2001, when he moved to Mazda Europe as project director, becoming managing director of Mazda UK. Muir was appointed president and chief executive of Mazda Europe in 2005 before becoming chairman of Seat in 2009.

Full-year, Q1 and plans

According to 2012 full-year results for the Group, Seat was the only brand under VW parentage to lose global sales, dropping 8.3% year-on-year to 321,000 global registrations. It also recorded a deficit of €156bn in operating profit for the year.

However, 2013 has begun brightly for Seat with worldwide sales up by 8.74% year-on-year in the first quarter to 87,100 registrations. Overall Group registrations for the period were up by 5.10% to 2.27m units.

At the start of the year, VW Financial Services announced its intention to increase finance penetration for all brands with which it operates, including Seat, from 30% to 40% within four years.

In the UK, Seat appointed Neil Williamson as director at the end of 2012.
