Renault UK has appointed Ken Ramirez as managing director following the departure of Thierry Sybord, who has moved to an undisclosed role for the brand in Europe.

Ramirez joins from Nissan, partner in the Renault-Nissan Alliance, where he was managing director of the brand in Latin America and the Caribbean, responsible for 37 markets. Ramirez’s background also includes the North American and Japanese markets and roles managing research and development, corporate planning, marketing and sales.

Ramirez said he was looking forward to joining the French marque as it prepares to launch six models in the next six months, including the Sandero and Duster from subsidiary Romanian brand Dacia and the next Renault Clio.

Sybord, who joined Renault UK in summer 2010, was a backer of electric vehicles in the UK, which Renault now leases the battery for on their models, and oversaw the restructure of Renault’s dealerships in 2012.

Despite Renault’s aim to register 55,000 new cars in the UK in 2012, the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders recorded only 40,760 new units sold by the brand, a drop of 40.45% year-on-year. However, the Renault Clio had sold 44,514 second-hand units by Q3, according to Experian Automotive’s Used Car Index.

In Europe, where Sybord will take up his new role, Renault dropped 18% year-on-year in total passenger car and LCV sales to 1,270,688 units in 2012, according to the manufacturer. Discounting France, sales were down 16.5% to 719,374 units. Five out of Renault’s top 10 markets remain in Europe, including France.
