New car registrations in May witnessed a shift in market share, as some of the biggest-selling brands of the past few years failed to grow sales, year-on-year, at the same pace as the total market.
Although the top-three brands by volumes registered – Ford, Vauxhall and Volkswagen – all added registrations year-on-year, each saw market share fall in May. However, Ford, for instance, actually gained 3.5 percentage points in its share of the retail market while dropping 6.5ppts in the commercial vehicle market.

Despite the relative dip in VW Passenger Cars, the VW Group can celebrate the performance of its executive brand Audi, which is now ahead and pulling away from BMW and Mercedes-Benz in sales, sales gains and market share. Fellow VW subsidiary Seat also recorded a healthy gain by volume and share.
The biggest gain by market share was made by Nissan, which appears ensconced ahead of Mercedes-Benz as the sixth-biggest-selling marque in the UK. Just as Nissan now takes up a greater share of new cars on UK roads compared to sister-brand Renault, so Citroën is gaining on the stable sales of allied marque Peugeot.
