Way back in June 2008, I wrote my first article for a magazine called Motor Finance. It was entitled "SsangYong names B2B finance provider", and I think it’s fair to say it didn’t set the world of automotive finance alight.

Now, five years and 60 editions of the title later, I’m writing my last piece for MF, as I pack my bags and prepare to move on to a new challenge as editor of Credit Today.

In the time that’s passed I’ve gone from a clueless, scruffily-dressed junior reporter to a scruffily-dressed group editor who has mastered the art of concealing his cluelessness, and any success I’ve enjoyed, I owe to those in the industry who have been kind enough to educate me and support the title.

From talking me through the finer points of securitisation over networking drinks to explaining the pros and cons of used car PCP over… well, more networking drinks, you’ve all been patient, accessible and great to spend time with.

I hope that in return, I’ve left you with a monthly publication that keeps you informed, engaged and, hopefully, possessed of a competitive advantage more often than not.

While I’ve gone on to be responsible for VRL’s (or rather Timetric’s) other titles in the fields of commercial asset finance and accounting, car finance was the first industry I wrote about, and remains pretty close to my heart. Either this really is a fascinating industry, or I’ve developed a horrible case of Stockholm Syndrome.

In any case, I imagine this isn’t the last time I’ll speak to you all in a professional capacity, so I’ll just say farewell for now.

More importantly, I’d like to hand over formally to Richard Irvine-Brown, who I hired nearly two years ago, and who will now take on the role of editor. In truth, he was more than qualified to take it a while back, and has largely been masterminding the production of the magazine and web content since last summer.

Also, unlike me (and as anyone who attended Billing Finance’s 30th birthday celebrations will be able to confirm) he actually has a driver’s license. Which is helpful when, you know, you write about cars.

If anything, the only change to the magazine will be that it will most likely arrive on your desk slightly earlier each month, as Rich won’t be waiting on my copy in order to go to print. I wish him every success for future issues (and not least because I’ll be trying to nick all of his stories).

So, thanks to all of you once again for reading, commenting and subscribing. It’s been a genuine pleasure.
