The Volkswagen Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with LG Electronics, agreeing to develop connected car technologies.

The memorandum affirms both Volkswagen and LG’s commitment to combine resources in order to push for the next generation of vehicle connectivity.

"Volkswagen is pressing on with the digitalisation of its brands," said Thomas Form, head of electronics and vehicle research at Volkswagen. "LG is a strong, reliable partner in the implementation of new features."

Through combining their technology, the companies see the partnership as a key opportunity to boost connectivity in vehicles, and change the nature of driving.

The two brands will mostly focus on Volkswagen’s Cross-Over Platform, its vehicle connectivity system.

The Cross-Over Platform will create a dedicated cloud system for use in cars and in the home, to allow smart devices to be controlled remotely from the road.

Vehicles equipped with the system will also be able to receive notifications with real-time driving suggestions.

"Comfort, safety, and energy efficiency play a central role," continued Form.

"We look forward to working with LG and to developing in future simple, easy-to-use, smart-home solutions for our customers integrated into our vehicle systems."
