More than 18,000 of the 43,293 accidents involving company vehicles in the UK in 2012 were due to carelessness on the part of the company car driver, according to Lex Autolease.
The fleet management firm explained those accidents where company car drivers were at fault were split between 8,506 collisions with static objects , 9,016 collisions with third-party vehicles and 844 collisions with pedestrians, cyclists or animals. The other 24,927 incidents were either not the fault of the company car driver or listed as ‘unknown circumstances’.
The average cost of each accident – repairs, liabilities, replacement vehicles – was £1,033; with Lex customers paying out in excess of £18.6m as a result of poor employee driving.
