The Society
of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has announced the
name of its new chief executive.

From January 2 2008 Paul
Everitt will be the new chief executive, taking over from
Christopher
Macgowan.
Everitt is currently the director of Civil Air Transport and
Communications at the Society of British Aerospace Companies – a
role with specific responsibility for environmental and safety
issues, experience which will serve him well whjen he takes up his
new post.
Prior to his role at the SBAC, Everitt was head of
Communications, Economics and Policy at the SMMT, where he played a
major part in developing and launching the motor industry
sustainability report and the annual CO2 report. He was also
prominent in “a range of high profile policy campaigns, including
the End of Life Vehicle Directive, Block Exemption and the Climate
Change Levy,” the SMMT said.
He commented: “SMMT has an essential role in creating the
conditions for a successful UK automotive industry. I feel
privileged to have the opportunity of leading it and serving one of
this country’s most important industrial sectors.

Outgoing chief executive Macgowan has been with the SMMT for over
eight years, and is leaving to “go plural” – to devote time and
energy to new projects both within and without the automotive world
