Any fleet operator with a good supply of smaller, more
economical cars to bring to the remarketing arena really has struck
gold in the current marketplace. It will come as no surprise to
anyone involved in used cars that the combination of rising fuel
prices, the threat of increased Vehicle Excise Duty and the
economic downturn has dampened motorists’ enthusiasm for bigger,
thirstier cars. The flipside of this, of course, is that demand for
low emission cars is correspondingly high.

In fact average values for smaller budget models from
fleet/lease sources actually rose in July to £2,937 (up by £180,
month on month). Values here have remained comparatively strong,
providing further impetus to the notion that motorists are seeking
to downsize as economic conditions tighten. This was also the only
part of the fleet/lease sector that saw CAP performance actually
rise against last month, up from 88 per cent to 89.6 per cent of
Clean.

The sub-120g/km sector is largely populated by superminis and
the latest generation of hatchbacks that have long been popular in
the used market. A perennial favourite as the second family car and
usually first choice for younger drivers who enjoy the cheaper
insurance premiums, the lure of a year’s VED for just £35 and
falling – compared to a minimum of £120 for cars above 120g/km – is
likely to widen the audience even further.

High mileage can have a disproportionate effect on value.
Presentation is always important, so don’t scrimp on pre-sale
preparation. Bold and bright colours work well, as do metallics,
and even pearlescents, and all help to give character to the cars.
Beware some of the over the top special edition patterns, however,
as these date quickly. Alloy wheels just add to the package and
make the car look that little bit more exclusive.

Diesel is very fashionable with used car buyers at the minute
and there are an increasing number of diesel options available in
the lower emission segments. Getting below 120g/km in a petrol
engine restricts the choices somewhat, however, compared to
diesel.

Aircon is a must and the more toys, the better. Buyers’
expectations continue to rise and, just because the car is small
and economical, that doesn’t mean a base spec will do.
