The US Congress enacted the Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act of 2010 (or the “Dodd-Frank Act” as it is more commonly known, named after its two principal Democratic Party sponsors, former senator Christopher Dodd of Connecticut and former representative Barney Frank of Massachusetts) in response to the financial meltdown of 2008 that had devastating effects across the global economy.

The value of a used car is a function of available supply and consumer demand – if one increases or decreases without the equivalent change in the other, then prices will respond to balance the market. Given that there are many factors that influence this balance, it’s at first glance surprising to see how well correlated measures of ‘confidence’, which should provide a good measure of demand, are against used car prices.

The UK seems to have found its new favourite motor finance product with PCP (personal contract purchase) now accounting for 77% of the marketplace.
