The number of passenger cars registered in the European Union increased by 7.6% year-on-year in May, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

The UK market experienced a marked decline, with registrations falling by 8.5% in May. This followed April’s registration figures, which though poor across the board, fell by 19.8% in the UK.

The EU-12, the countries that have joined the EU since its enlargement in 2004 showed strong growth, with a 17.3% increase in registrations to 119,887 registrations. Hungarian passenger car registrations saw the largest percentage growth among the EU-12 countries, increasing by 28.6% year-on-year in May.

VW Group remained the most popular car maker for registrations, increasing registrations by 8.2% year-on-year in May to 335,187 units, and reaching a higher market share of 24.2%.

From January to May of this year, passenger car registrations in the EU grew by 5.3% to 6,719,209 units. Over this period, the UK was the only major market to show a decline, with a 0.6% fall in registrations.
