“The electric vehicle revolution will now take
off.”

That was the announcement made by Michel
Taride, executive vice president of Hertz Corporation as the global
vehicle rental firm formally announced the addition of the Vauxhall
Ampera to its fleet of car-share electric vehicles (EV).

Speaking at an event in London, which also
launched a partnership between Hertz and Transport for London (TfL)
charge point provider Source London, Taride said smarter and faster
vehicles, a clear standard in charge points and in-car technology
have made it possible for “a new transportation”.

Hertz currently provides a fleet of EVs
through its car share scheme Hertz On Demand in 10 cities worldwide
and Taride praised London as a leader in “advancing a new model for
mobility.”

However, he stressed the importance of
spreading alternative fuel vehicles across other UK cities and
called on the stakeholders involved in EVs to work together promote
accessibility to alternative fuel cars.

“Like London, cities need to have plans in
place to develop EV networks; bringing together stakeholders
including EV manufacturers, charging station providers and
customers. In addition to on-street charging, corporations should
install charging stations in buildings and business campuses to
support fleet business cars as well as personal cars.”

Taride also announced the launch of Hertz On
Demand EV fleet in Oxford at the event.

“The car rental industry, local and central
government, charging station providers, businesses and consumers
now need to come together and each play their role in spreading the
EV revolution throughout the UK,” said Taride.

His words where supported by Richard Bruce,
head of the government’s Office of Low Emissions Vehicles which
responsible for implementing the UK’s ambitions plans for transport
de-carbonisation.

Bruce, citing the availability and popularity
of hybrid vehicles globally, said there had been a significant
uptake in alternative fuel vehicles almost by stealth and the trend
could not be dismissed as a niche.

“It is not a question of if but when,” he
said. “Electric vehicles are not the domain of lentil-eating
sandal-wearers any longer.”
