Fleet Friday: Registration to refrigeration

A round up of the week’s fleet news including EU and Volvo commercial vehicle registrations and the latest UK deals.

Registrations

Spanish growth part of EU CV registration recovery

Commercial vehicle (CV) registrations across the EU (excluding Malta) for the first nine months of 2013 were down by 4% year-on-year but up by 6.1% for September, according to the European automobile manufacturers’ association, the ACEA.

Total new CV registrations to the end of September stood at 1,230,188, with Spain and the UK up on last year by 1.8% and 7.9% respectively. Registrations in Germany were down by 6.9%, in France by 7.0% and Italy by 16.2%.

For the month of September, registrations were down in France by 1.8% and in Italy by 3.5%, but up in Germany by 4.2%, in the UK by 12.5% and in Spain by 25.4%.

EU light commercial vehicle registrations to the end of September were down by 3.4% to 1,004,479 units, but up in September by 5.6% year-on-year to 130,789 units.

In the first three quarters of the year, registrations were down in France by 6.9%, in Germany by 6.4% and in Italy by 16.3%, but up in Spain by 4.0% and in the UK by 9.6%.

For September, registrations were down in Italy by 1.5% and in France by 3.1%, but up in Germany by 4.3%, in the UK by 10.3% and in Spain by 29.1%.

Truck (over 3.5t) registrations, excluding buses and coaches, totalled 202,239 for the first nine months of the year, down 6.8%, and 26,058 for September, up 7.6%.

In the three-month period, registrations declined in Germany by 8.6%, in France by 9.5%, in Spain by 11.7% and in Italy by 17.3%. The UK bucked the trend with 1.5% market growth.

In September, registrations were up in all major markets bar Italy. Germany was up by 2.5%, France by 7.0%, Spain by 12.1% and the UK by 32.0%.

Bus and coach registrations were down by 2.7% across the EU to 23,470 units, January to September, but up by 15.7% for September.

In the first nine months of the year, registrations were up in Germany by 3.0% and in France by 8.6%, but down in Italy by 1.8%, in Spain by 7.3% and in the UK by 12.0%. For September, however, the market in the UK was up by 21.3%, in France 13.6% and in Germany by 38.6%.

Across the EU 151,817 heavy commercial vehicles were registered between January and September, a decline of 6.1%. Registrations were down in France by 8.4%, in Germany by 8.9%, in Spain by 12.1% and in Italy by 14.1%, with the UK – up 6.1% -the only major market to record year-on-year growth in the period.

For the month of September, however, heavy truck registrations were up by 8.7% to 20,114 units: up 3.7% in Germany, 7.0% in France, 11.0% in Spain and 40.2% in the UK. Registrations in Italy were down by 24.1%.

South America growth adds 1% to Volvo CV registrations

Registrations of Volvo Trucks were up 6% year-on-year in August and 1% for the first eight months of 2013, despite dropping 4% and 8% in Europe for the two respective periods.

Volvo Trucks delivered 7,590 units worldwide (1,539 in Western Europe, 665 in Eastern Europe) in August and 68,670 units (16,832 in Western Europe, 8,252 in Eastern Europe) in the year to August.

UK deals

Real deal for Citroën

International real estate management company Jones Lang Lasalle (JLL) has taken 98 Citroën Berlingo LCVs, each on a 36-month / 90,000-mile contract.

The vans were supplied by Perrys Fleet Direct, Luton, part of Citroën’s franchised network.

JLL opted for the vans, following a purchase review, particularly because of the inclusion of satellite navigation and stolen vehicle tracking as standard, with the option to upgrade to Citroën’s Fleet Director real-time fleet management system.

Sofa so good for Iveco

Iveco has delivered six Stralis Hi-Road tractor units and 44 Eurocargo rigids to furniture retailer DFS, supplied by Guest Truck & Van. Iveco has now provided DFS with commercial vehicles for more than 30 years.

The vans are expected to run as part of the 240-strong fleet of DFS for between five and six years.

With the Hi-Roads expected to cover 150,000km (93,200 miles) each year, DFS said part of the decision to renew with Iveco was the aftersales support.

Gold and cold for Volvo

UK refrigerated transport and logistics company Peter Green Chilled has had 15 Volvo FH tractor units supplied, on the manufacturer’s Gold Contract, through Truck and Bus Wales & West.

The order follows that of five FHs by the company, the first Volvos taken by the company in its 60-plus fleet, in 2011.

Cold freeze from Burnt Tree

Courier service Burton Sameday has taken a refrigerated van on long term rental from Burnt Tree.

The Mercedes-Benz LWB 313 Sprinter with a Carrier Xarios 350 refrigerated system has been hired for up to two years, and Burton Sameday has agreed to take out a second vehicle of the same specification.

…and finally

Chevin adds driver’s licence check

UK Fleet management software provider Chevin has added a driver’s licence checking tool to its FleetWave fleet management software.

The tool allows a series of rules and profiles to be set up for each fleet, such as checking for points with the DVLA once a year, for example.

Driving licence checks are bought by fleets on a pay-on-use basis.
