Ford is planning on opening a ‘Ford Smart Mobility Innovation Office’ in London in order to work with partners and institutions to develop smart mobility for European cities.

The office will open later this year, and will be based at Here East, a development in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, East London. Initially housing 40 staff, the London location will mark their third smart mobility office after Dearborn, Michigan, and Palo Alto, California, and the first outside of the United States.

In 2016, Ford revealed that it was aiming to develop autonomous vehicles and ridesharing by the year 2021. At the opening of London Tech Week, Steven Armstrong, group vice president and president of Europe, Middle East and Africa, at Ford, said the move will allow greater collaboration.

Armstrong said: “Basing our rapidly-growing team here at in the heart of mobility innovation in London is critical to accelerating our learning and development of new technologies.

“We will also be ideally placed to build on existing partner projects and have access to London’s world-class digital talent. Both will be key as we build towards our ambition of being a global leader in mobility solutions.”

Ford said the private road network in the Olympic Park area may be used for testing its mobility projects in the future. Last year, Ford warned investors that its investment in autonomous cars was likely to reduce its 2017 profits.
