Stellantis reported a 25% decline in new car registrations across Europe in September, contributing to a 3% decrease in the overall European market for the month, according to JATO Dynamics.

The findings show 1,119,320 new car registrations in September 2024, around 40,000 fewer than the same month last year.

Stellantis recorded a fall in sales in 22 of the 28 European markets, with Italy and France, its two main markets, seeing declines of 34% and 17%, respectively.

Stellantis brands Fiat, Citroen and Opel/Vauxhall experienced steep declines in sales, with Fiat registrations plunging by 43%, Citroen by 41% and Opel/Vauxhall by 24%.

Despite the overall downturn, demand for BEVs in Europe has shown resilience.

Registrations of new BEVs increased by 14% in September compared with the same month in the previous year, with a total of 212,197 new BEVs registered.

However, year-to-date volumes dipped by 3%, with 1.43 million units registered in 2024 compared with the corresponding period in 2023.

JATO Dynamics global analyst Felipe Munoz said: “It is hard to say for certain whether BEVs will continue along this positive trajectory, but the monthly increase in registrations is welcome news – especially considering that consumers still have reservations about the adoption of electric cars.

“Stellantis may see these results as an indicator that the time has come to refresh its offering and reposition its BEV lineup to ensure the downward trend doesn’t continue.”

Earlier this month, data released by JATO Market Dynamics revealed a 12% rise in BEV registrations in the French market during the first eight months of 2024, although this growth has fallen short of manufacturers’ expectations.

Jeep stood out among the top ten brands, with a 420% jump in new registrations.
