The Electric Car Scheme has announced a new partnership with energy supplier OVO, aimed at making electric vehicle (EV) driving more affordable and encouraging more people to make the switch to electric cars.
Under the partnership, both new and existing customers of The Electric Car Scheme will receive 6,000 miles of free EV charging. After that, they will gain access to OVO’s Charge Anytime specialist EV tariff, which offers a rate of 7p per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for EV owners with a smart meter and home EV charger. This translates to approximately 2p per mile.
The Electric Car Scheme’s analysis suggests that the cost of running a petrol car surpassed the annual charging costs of an average UK EV driver around 15 July this year, assuming standard electricity rates. With OVO’s lower 7p/kWh rate, the cost advantage for EV drivers would have been reached earlier, around mid-February, due to the reduced electricity costs.
Affordability remains a key barrier to the adoption of electric vehicles, with 68% of respondents to The Electric Car Scheme’s Affording Sustainability report identifying it as a concern. Additionally, 34% of respondents cited the cost of running an EV as another challenge.
Thom Groot, CEO of The Electric Car Scheme, highlighted the benefits of the new partnership: “This partnership offers our customers nearly a year’s worth of free driving, followed by some of the most competitive charging costs available on the market. This is another step in making an EV the obvious choice for anyone looking for their next car and thinking about making the green choice.”
Groot also emphasised the scheme’s success in helping thousands of people access affordable EVs through salary sacrifice over the past two years, stressing the company’s commitment to making green technology more accessible.

By GlobalDataAlex Thwaites, Director of EV at OVO, echoed this sentiment: “Salary sacrifice schemes are one of the most popular and cost-effective ways for drivers to make the switch to an EV, and our partnership with The Electric Car Scheme means customers can access the lowest rate for their home charging.”
The collaboration began on 8 October.
