The number of cars produced in the UK in June increased by 3.7% to 136,419 compared to the same month last year, according to figures released today by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The rise in June was driven by 16.5% growth in production for the home market and resumes a series of nine consecutive monthly year-on-year rises, interrupted only by the fall in figures last month.

June’s performance led to UK car production rising 3.5% year-to-date to 791,314 units in first half of 2014.

The most significant increase this year occurred in the number of units manufactured for export, up 4.0% since 2013 to 625,459.

According to Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, the industry benefits from the introduction of new models this year and "billions of pounds of investment are still to reach production fruition."

"However, with this growth comes a need to bolster the domestic supply chain and address major skills shortages; both of which the UK industry is committed to addressing", Hawes concluded.
