Volvo UK has launched its online new car buying platform, providing services from vehicle specification through to the final purchase agreement.

Customers can select the model they want, choosing each detail from powertrain and colours to equipment options and accessories. The customer’s local retailer will manage the process, guiding them through the process.

All forms of purchase are possible on the site, including personal contract purchase (PCP) or personal contract hire (PCH) agreement, a conditional sale or a cash purchase. Customers can also part-exchange their old vehicle, apply for finance and sign their agreement via e-signature.

The announcement comes after the firm revealed sales volumes were up 39% year-on-year in the first three months of 2019 – the company’s best ever UK sales figures.

Jon Wakefield, managing director at Volvo Car UK, commented: “Whether online or offline the way people buy cars has changed. Customers now have much more control over the process, and Volvo Online helps them to take that one step further.

“It makes life as easy as possible without compromising on choice or security, and lets customers drive the purchase process when it’s most convenient for them.”

Last year Volvo announced a partnership with chipmaker Nvidia to jointly develop an AI-powered computing platform for vehicles, as the two companies deepen collaboration after entering an autonomous vehicle partnership two years ago.

The collaboration was established to look at “driver-support systems, energy-management technology and in-car personalisation options”. Work on sensors for driver and surroundings monitoring will also back Volvo’s autonomous vehicle development efforts. Volvo added the new AI-powered core computer will provide a much easier route towards regular over-the-air software updates.

“A successful launch of autonomous drive will require an enormous amount of computing power as well as constant advances in artificial intelligence,” said Håkan Samuelsson, Volvo chief executive.
