The total number of cars manufactured in the UK fell by 277 units year-on-year in November 2014, to 137,347, according to figures released by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The fall was entirely caused by weakening exports, with the number of cars manufactured for this purpose down 6.2% year-on-year to 108,719. The number built for domestic consumption grew in the same period from 21,714 to 28,628.

As a result 1,419,427 vehicles had been manufactured in the UK for 2014 to the end of November, down 0.3% compared to the same period in 2013. Of these, 78.9% were made for export, compared to 79.4% in 2013.

Mike Hawes, SMMT chief executive, said: "Model changes and economic uncertainty in export markets have flattened UK car production, but the industry remains in a strong position with growth expected to return next year.

"Global demand for UK automotive engineering continues to be at a high level, and manufacturing plants are seeing the benefits of significant recent investments. UK-built cars offer a vast range of technologies to lower carbon emissions and improve air quality, underlining the country’s important role in the continuing drive to reduce all emissions."
