Vehicle valuation firm CAP has opened its website up to motorists, as well as trade, and increased its social media activity.

It is the first time in the 34-year history of the company that CAP information, including used vehicle trends, facts and opinions, has been made available beyond trade professionals.

CAP staff will also figure more prominently in social media with a range of blogs, a Twitter feed and increased presence in online forum discussions, such as the Motor Finance LinkedIn Group.

‘Time is right’

In a company statement, CAP pointed out its values are already used to help benchmark and negotiate prices between dealers and customers in the second-hand market, sometimes being advertised on forecourts as an independent verification of the worth of a vehicle, as well as being used by third-party trade portals and consumer organisation Which?

Mike Hind, communications manager at CAP, said: "These days [motor retail dealers] are more likely to show you the CAP value on their smartphone or computer screen."

Hind added: "The time is right for us to step in and help bring dealers and motorists together.

"We also have big plans to help motorists with their vehicle purchase decisions directly and development is already under way on some unique tools to help them save money on their motoring."
