New car sales were down across England,
Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in December 2011, both
month-on-month and year-on-year, according to figures from the
Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).
Both England and Scotland were down by less
than the UK average (minus the Isle of Man and Channel Islands) of
3.77% for December compared to November 2011 while both Northern
Ireland and Wales saw sales fall by a significant margin of 13.35%
and 12.61% respectively.

For the year, new car sales in England were
down 3.91% compared to 2010, were down in Northern Ireland by
11.7%, by 4.85% in Scotland and 9.94% in Wales, with their total
down 4.42%.
England accounted for 87.72% of sales among
the regions in December, and 85.45% for the year. Scotland saw
7.99% of new car sales for December, 8.64% for the year.
New car sales in Wales made up marginally less
of a proportion among the regions – at 3.08% of December’s sales
and 3.46% for all of 2011 – compared to the share over the same
periods in 2010, while sales in Northern Ireland were marginally
increased as a proportion to 1.35% of December sales and 2.65%,
year-to-date.
