Approximately three out of four uses of iVendi’s credit pre-qualifying service CarFinanceChecker accessed by a smartphone or tablet are through an Apple device, namely the iPhone or iPad.

The figure comes despite the Android operating system, the Linux-based alternative to Apple’s mobile online technology, accounting for 80% of the smartphone market and 40% of the tablet market, according to the motor finance technology provider.

James Tew, director at iVendi, said: "When it comes to people actually using their devices to access dealer websites, Apple users seem to outnumber [Android users] dramatically."

Alternative response

Tew explained there was "some evidence across the IT sector that Apple users tend to be more technologically literate and comfortable with mobile access," meaning car and van dealers "should make sure that their online resources work really well on iPads and iPhones if they want to generate business".

However, Tew said he expected, and the general IT industry expected, mobile access through Android, which is owned by Google, Microsoft’s Windows operating system and other platforms to increase gradually.

As such, Tew reiterated his belief dealerships would be best served by employing "responsive web design, which should work well on any device".
