New commercial vehicle registrations in the EU increased by 13.3% in the first quarter of the year, compared to the same period in 2014,according to figures released by the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

More than half a million (502,210) commercial vehicles were registered in the first three months of 2015.

Nearly all major market posted year-on-year growth, with the highest recorded in Spain (42.3%) and UK (24.2%). New commercial vehicles sales increased by 7.1% in Germany and 7% in Italy, while France was the only major market to record a decline (0.5%).

Over the first quarter the EU market for new light commercial vehicles (up to 3.5t) grew by 15.6% compared to Q1 2014, reaching 60,408 units. UK and Spain drove the majority of this expansion, as registrations of this type of commercial vehicles rose by 67.6% and 23.4% respectively. Impressive growth of 139.1% in new light commercial vehicles was recorded in the Netherlands.

Registrations of new medium and heavy commercial vehicles over 3.5t (trucks) increased by 10.7% in the first quarter of the year compared to the same period in 2014. There were 74,138 new tracks sold across the EU in the first three months of 2015.

Among the major markets, year-on-year growth in truck sales was witnessed in the UK (45.1%), Spain (22.5%) and Italy (12.7%). On the other hand, truck registrations fell in France (8.6%) and Germany (1%).
