51% of British drivers expect to buy an electric vehicles (EV) in the next five years, a survey by newly-launched website TotalEV.com has found.
Rising fuel prices were cited as the main motivator by 45% of the 1,000 motorists interviewed, but only 35% cited environmental concerns as the primary factor.

Northern Ireland had the highest rate of motorists who would be ready to switch, 77%. TotalEV attributed the high proportion to a more developed charging infrastructure than the rest of the UK.
Equally cited as barriers to switching to electric were the cost of vehicles (27%), a lack of charging infrastructure (22%), cars’ driving range (20%) and a lack of adequate knowledge to decide (21%).
Daniel Green, businessman and founder of TotalEV.com, said: “This survey confirms what we already suspected – that Britain has woken up to the benefits of electric driving. The industry needs to wake up fast.
“There are already 110,000 plug-in cars across the country but as technology and infrastructure improves over the next few years and more manufacturers enter the marketplace offering more choice to consumers, we expect to see a transformation in the number of EVs on Britain’s roads.
