Advances in automotive technology have been an important feature of 2015, according to managing director of LeasePlan UK Matt Dyer.

In his review of 2015, Dyer highlighted the development of driverless cars and the increased engagement of drivers with telematics during the year.

Dyer said: "2015 has been an eventful year in our industry. The evolution of the driverless car has made giant strides forward, with Google and Tesla leading the charge. These developments have the potential to fundamentally change the way we interact with vehicles and as a result the future of mobility is something that is never far from our thoughts.

"Advances in automotive technology have been a feature of 2015 and telematics are another key area of growth with an increasing number of drivers now accepting this technology. We’ve seen that telematics can drive a company’s fleet efficiency – not only from an economic point of view as increased safety and higher recovery rates of stolen cars will lead to reduced insurance claims – but also with respect to environmental compliance by reducing fuel consumption and vehicle usage."

Dyer also commented on government policies and actions that affected the fleet sector in 2015, with some being ‘welcome’ and some not.

He said:"In a year of political change, Boris Johnson’s commitment to ULEVs in London and a wider return to economic growth in the UK were both welcome developments. Less positive was the Autumn Statement announcement that the 3% diesel surcharge removal has been deferred from 2016 to 2021. We are now working closely with the BVRLA to urge Government to reverse the decision on this levy which delivered an unexpected additional cost burden to drivers of diesel company cars.

"Digitalisation has been a key focus for Government and following the tax disc removal in 2014 this year saw the DVLA launch their Share Driving Licence Service. I am pleased to say LeasePlan’s own digital transformation has been somewhat smoother than the DVLA’s website struggles following this removal of the driving licence paper counterpart."
