Polestar, the Swedish electric performance car brand owned by Volvo and renowned for its electric vehicles (EVs), has released its Sustainability Report for 2023, showcasing significant strides towards its climate targets, according to a press release.
The company achieved a notable 9% reduction in relative greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs) per sold car compared to the previous year, amounting to a decrease of 3.4 tCO2e.
This accomplishment stems from Polestar’s concerted efforts in three key areas: utilising carefully selected materials with lower climate impact, incorporating renewable electricity in car and battery production processes, and enhancing energy efficiency during the use phase of their vehicles.
These achievements underscore Polestar’s commitment to decoupling growth from increased emissions, aligning with its vision to accelerate the transition to electric mobility while integrating sustainable and innovative solutions.
Fredrika Klarén, Polestar’s Head of Sustainability, emphasised the company’s clear vision of driving the EV transition forward while continually improving the sustainability of electric cars.
Klarén highlighted the importance of industry-wide transparency and concrete action plans to meet climate pledges, stressing Polestar’s dedication to sharing its progress and climate roadmap towards its 2040 climate goal.

The company achieved a significant milestone by enabling the traceability of lithium and nickel used in the batteries of the Polestar 3 model, supplementing the existing monitoring of cobalt and mica with blockchain technology in 2020 and 2021, respectively.
The report authors say it offers transparent insights into the company’s adoption of a due diligence approach to identify and address sustainability-related risks. Notably, Polestar introduced a digital platform in 2023 to streamline the collection of sustainability-related data, facilitating greater transparency and compliance with industry standards and regulations.
