Since operations began in September 2007, the Association of
Chief Police Officers Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service (AVCIS)
has announced the recovery of 289 cars, worth £3.9 million, on
behalf of Finance & Leasing Association (FLA) members.
FLA members, who provided £19bn of motor finance in 2007 and
fund AVCIS, have seen an almost seven-fold return on
investment.
Stephen Sklaroff, director-general of the FLA, said: “The FLA takes
fraud very seriously. Financial crime has a lower public profile
than it warrants and in current economic conditions the resource
dedicated to fraud should be increased. We look forward to working
with AVCIS in 2008/09.”

The FLA has agreed to sponsor the unit for another twelve months
– allowing the unit to expand its operations.
“This is a clear example of Police and Industry working together
to make communities safer,” said Detective Chief Inspector Paul
Lambotte, head of AVCIS. “Not only are we recovering
fraudulently-obtained vehicles for their legal owners, but we are
sending a clear message to fraudsters.”
