Inchcape Fleet Solutions (IFS) has won a five-year renewal of
its contract with British Waterways, which operates a fleet of
1,000 vehicles – 450 of them company cars, with the remainder
commercial vehicles.

IFS first won an outsourcing contract for the British Waterways
fleet in 2004, when it beat out six other lessors for the
prize.

Under the terms of the deal, British Waterways will outsource
the management of its company car fleet to IFS, while the lessor
will take on the job of acquiring commercial vehicles for British
Waterways through outright purchase, and of disposing of them as
appropriate.

According to IFS, its risk management solution for at-work
drivers was key to winning the renewal of its contract, along with
its bespoke web tools, which allow British Waterways’ management,
fleet administrators and drivers to access real-time fleet
information via an extranet and an online portal. Drivers can also
order vehicles online, following specified fleet policy
guidelines.

“The continuing development of online functionality by Inchcape
Fleet Solutions has enabled British Waterways to remove a
significant amount of administrative day-to-day fleet issues from
our staff, while retaining strategic responsibility. As a result,
significant cost savings have been delivered across the business,”
said national procurement manager at British Waterways, Rob
Williams.

IFS managing director Terry Bartlett pointed out that
fleet contracts with a five-year term are “relatively rare”, and
that the renewal underlines the confidence British Waterways has in
its fleet management company partner.
