Toyota has entered into a three-year partnership with EDF Energy
to begin an initiative involving the lease of prototype electric
cars to companies in London.
The Japanese manufacturer has said the initiative will provide
the government with a valuable insight into car recharging and
infrastructure issues.

It will lease 20 of its Prius Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles (PHVs) to
five London companies, while EDF is to set up car battery charging
points at workplaces, on the street and elsewhere.
The prototype car can reportedly run for 12.5
miles and drive at 62 mph using only its electric motor, and for
trips up to about 15 miles, it is said to use 60% less fuel.
It is designed to complete most urban trips without consuming
any fuel consumption or creating any emissions, and automatically
switches to its 1.8 litre petrol engine if the battery runs out in
the middle of a journey.
