New passenger car sales grew 1.3% year-on-year across Europe in May to 1,109,893 units, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

The was the 21st consecutive month of sales growth in the continent; however it was also the lowest percentage increase in sales since the recovery began.

Growth wasn’t helped by falling year-on-year sales in Germany and France, down 6.7% and 3.5% respectively, or slower UK sales, up 2.4% on May 2014.

Both Spain and Italy managed double digit year-on-year growth in the month, up 14% and 10.8%, respectively.

Portugal saw 27,186 cars sold in May 2015, up 33.2% on the year before, the highest growth of any EU economy. The ACEA also noted that much of the growth was supported by new member states such as Poland and the Czech Republic.

VW Group, PSA Group and Renault Group held onto the top three spots in terms of market share for the month, however Renault caught up with PSA. Whereas PSA Group sales fell by 5.5% year-on-year to 114,174 in the May, Renault sales increased by 4.8% year-on-year to 106,394.
