Sports car manufacturers Morgan and Lotus showed strongly in the rankings and held seven of the top ten positions, from 2nd to 8th consecutively, and over the course of the past 36 months the brands’ cars retained between 52% and 64% of their original value.

In all, convertibles proved to be as good as an investment as a car can ever be, with only luxury SUV’s retaining more of the original price than a convertible.

The recent trend for folding hard top convertibles has not been as well received by consumers as more traditional styles, with the cloth or "rag top" variety of convertible holding more of its value over the vehicle’s lifetime according to CAP.

Philip Nothard, retail and consumer specialist at CAP, said: "We are a nation of romantics at heart. That means we still love the feel of the wind in our hair – even if it’s mixed with a bit of drizzle.
