More than half a million (582,135) alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) were registered in the EU in 2015, up 20% year-on-year, according to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

AFV registrations represented 4.2% of total passenger car registrations. The uplift was triggered by a 108.8% rise in electric vehicle sales and a 23.1% increase in hybrid electric vehicle sales. Registrations of AFV vehicles other than electric declined by 8.4%.

Among the EU’s major markets, the Netherlands saw the largest increase of AFVs registered in 2015, as they grew by 79% to 60,589 units. In Spain, AFV registrations grew by 56.1% year-on-year (23,152), in France 43.4% (80,728), in the UK 40.3% (72,775) and in Germany 11.1% (55,994).

Despite a decline in AFV registrations (3.6%), Italy remained Europe’s largest AFV market, with 210,956 units registered in 2015.

In the fourth quarter of 2015, AFV sales grew by 21.1% year-on-year. EV registrations in the EU grew by 160.5%, while demand for hybrid vehicles increased by 28.8%.
