Total alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) registrations in the EU grew by 17.4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2015 to 143,595, according to the European Automotive Manufacturers Association (ACEA).

Electric vehicle (EV) registrations increased by 53% year-on-year to 27,575 units, while new hybrid vehicle (HEV) registrations rose by 22.6% to 62,577 units.

Among the EU’s major markets, the UK saw the largest increase of AFVs registered over the period (62.4%), followed by France (59.7%) and Spain (58%). Among the EFTA countries, demand was primarily driven by Norway (74.1%) with 11,614 vehicles registered.

The UK was the third largest AFV market, with 10,545 units sold in Q2. In Italy AFV registrations stood at 60,121, in France at 20,420 and Germany at 14,118.

In the UK, EV registrations rose by 164.3% year-on-year in Q2 2015, reaching 6,164 units. HEV sales increased by 33.4% to 10,959.
