Motorcycle registrations continued to increase with a year-to-date growth of 12.3% compared to the same period in 2014, according to the National Motorcycle Dealers Association (NMBA).
Following the release of the 65-plate in September, sales increased by 7.2%. However, the head of the national motorcycle dealers association (NMDA) Stephen Latham characterised the September figure as ‘disappointing’.

Scooters sales were down 6.6% year-on-year in September, while bikes in the sub 50cc category continued their downward trend, posting a 17.1% decline.
On the other hand, the 51-125cc sector recorded an 11% year-on-year growth in September and sales 650-1000c mid powered machines were up 22.5% in the month. Sales of prestigious motorcycles over 1000cc increased by 16%.
Honda models sold the most in September with 2457 machines registered, followed by Yamaha with 1472 units and BMW with 1417 machines registered.
Latham says: "In 2014, bike registrations passed the 100,000 mark. By spring there were predictions of a further 10% growth in 2015 totalling 110,000 motorcycles on the road, and a few months ago expectations that even this predication could be beaten, however in hindsight this now seems unrealistic.
