Motability Operations has entered into a partnership with connected mobility provider Targa Telematics to integrate original equipment manufacturer (OEM) vehicle data into its IT systems, according to a company press release.

The agreement centres on the use of embedded vehicle data to support fleet management across the Motability Scheme, under which customers can exchange their mobility allowance for a vehicle lease package. The integration is intended to support vehicle maintenance, compliance and operational efficiency rather than alter the Scheme’s core leasing model.

Under the partnership, Targa Telematics will supply a platform that aggregates and standardises OEM data across multiple vehicle brands. The data will be used to monitor vehicle health and maintenance status, with the aim of reducing breakdown risk, vehicle-off-road time and maintenance-related disruption within the fleet.

Motability Operations said the use of OEM data, irrespective of make or model, would allow for a more consistent approach to fleet oversight and preventative maintenance. The company will continue to manage vehicle registrations directly, while Targa’s role will focus on data processing and operational insight.

Targa Telematics has worked with OEM vehicle data since 2017, using embedded telematics to generate operational insights for fleet and mobility operators. The Motability Operations project represents a further large-scale deployment of this approach in the UK market.

The integration will be delivered in phases, with coverage expected to expand progressively across the Motability Scheme fleet.

Commenting in the release, Chris Horbowyj, UK commercial director at Targa Telematics, said the partnership would support the “collection and standardisation” of manufacturer data and convert it into insights that assist Motability Operations’ “day-to-day work”, including vehicle maintenance and safety oversight.

Andy Broadfield, managing director of electric and insurance at Motability Operations, said a “dependable vehicle” was central to the Scheme and that the use of vehicle data would help the organisation “better monitor vehicle health” and reduce the likelihood of breakdowns, while maintaining safety and compliance standards.
