UK car production rose 21.3% in April year-on-year to over 130,000, marking the biggest monthly rise in production since July 2012, according to data from the society of motor manufacturers and traders (SMMT).
The increase was driven by the production of new vehicles such as the Nissan Qashqai and an uplift in demand in export markets.

Of the 133,437 vehicles produced, 106,507 were sent for export, up 21.4% year-on-year. Home demand rose 20.9%. A total of 79.8% of the total production was destined for the overseas market which, despite the uplift in production, was flat on the year before for April.
For the whole year to the end of April the share of production for the export market had risen year-on-year, at 78.9% versus 77.6%.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, expects that the upturn in production to continue as the car market recovers across Europe and the rest of the world.
