The UK was found to be the fourth most expensive place to own a car in LeasePlan’s index of motoring costs.

The Index looked at 11 countries, including the ‘big five,’ with the Netherlands coming out as the most expensive country to own a car in.

UK car list prices were the highest in the index, while the UK had the second most expensive fuel costs, after Italy. UK diesel costs were slightly more than Italy’s, however Italian petrol costs were notably more expensive.

However the UK came in cheapest for maintenance, bringing the monthly costs down. It was also firmly below the Netherlands, Italy, France and Spain, in interest rates for loans.

Across the continent, LeasePlan found that fixed costs, such as maintenance and taxes, represented 70% of the total cost, which the company said meant motorists had minimal influence on overall costs.
