Electric car registrations reached 14,586 in the first six months of 2015, surpassing last year’s annual total, an analysis from Go Ultra Low revealed.
Registrations of plug-in cars have accelerated rapidly over the first half of the year, growing by 256% compared to the same period last year.

Transport minister Andrew Jones said: "Soaring demand across the UK shows that more and more people view ultra-low emission vehicles as the right choice for them. Plug-in cars are green, cheap to run and benefit both families and businesses. The government is investing £500m over the next five years to help position Britain as a world leader in the technology, supporting skilled jobs and driving economic growth."
The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV was the best-selling electric vehicle in the first six months of the year, with 7,255 units sold. The Nissan LEAF and the BMW i3 followed with sales of 2,964 and 1,760 units respectively.
The South of England led all other regions on registration numbers, with more than 3,000 cars and vans registered there from January to June. The highest rate of growth in plug-in vehicle sales was recorded in the South West region of the country, with registrations growing by 420%.
