The used car market has experienced its best year since 2008 with sales in excess of 6.8 million units in 2013, according to information provider Experian.

The number of units sold represents a year-on-year uplift of 0.9% on 2012 and is the highest in five years, when over 7.2 million vehicles were sold.

There was a wider split in growth rates throughout the regions with East Anglia experiencing growth of 8% and Wales a decline of 1.2%.

The fastest growing sector within the used market was for cars aged nine years or older which saw over 6% of growth, this made up for a decline in sales of newer cars, particularly those between three and nine years, which fell 4.4%.

Ford, which has the UK’s top selling new car in the Fiesta, had the top selling used model in the Ford Focus. The Focus sold over 312,000 units, up 3.7% on the previous year. The Fiesta and Vauxhall’s Corsa were the next two highest selling vehicles.
