The SMMT has taken the “difficult decision” to
cancel next year’s British International Motor Show, in response to
the downturn facing vehicle manufacturers.
The motor industry association said: “SMMT,
with the support of the UK motor industry, remains committed to
showcasing the achievements and products of the automotive
sector.

“However, the economic downturn and the unprecedented challenges
facing the industry both in the UK and around the world, have made
it impossible for exhibitors to commit to a 2010 event.”

While highly popular with the general public, with 2008’s show –
the UK’s largest consumer exhibition – attracting record numbers of
visitors, the financial squeeze being put on OEMs made the 2010
show untenable, the society said.

The show has officially been postponed “until market conditions
will again permit us to deliver a world class event that truly
showcases the UK industry”, said Rob Mackenzie, joint managing
director of International Motor Industry Events, which organises
the motor show under licence from the SMMT.
