For Q2 2007, only 1.6 per cent of fleets reported a rise in the
number of diesels on their fleet compared to 25.1 per cent for the
same period in 2006. Meanwhile petrol has shown a slight upturn,
with a net 2.7 per cent of fleets showing an increase in the number
of petrol vehicles compared to 12 months ago.

Alternative fuel, LPG, is also showing a net decrease in use
of 9.7 per cent against Q2 2006. But electric vehicles saw a net
increase of 3 per cent and the ‘other’ category of fuel use by
fleets increased by 4.9 per cent.

Rich Green, managing director at GE Fleet said: “For fleets,
the issue of fuel choice is closely linked to three issues – cost,
tax burden on drivers and the environment. Fleets today are
struggling to achieve the best balance between these factors.

“The government clearly believes that biofuels are the way ahead
but, in the short-medium term, there is not much that fleets can do
to proactively adopt them.”
