Strong 2007 growth for lessor

Multi-marque fleet management and leasing company Alphabet has
released its results for 2007, and announced year-on-year growth of
11 per cent in its total leased and managed fleet, from 36,470
units in 2006 to 40,600.

The fleet size increase came about as a result of both
organic growth and the winning of new contracts, such as a deal to
provide the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents’ fleet in
July and oil company Shell’s 2,300-strong company car fleet in
August, the company said.

Alphabet marked its 10th anniversary in 2007 by beginning to
implement the results of a strategic review which involved a
shake-up of the divisions of its parent company, BMW Group
Financial Services (BMW GFS). As part of the restructuring process,
former commercial director of Alphabet, Richard Schooling moved to
the role of chief operating officer at BMW GFS while Mark Sinclair
took the position Schooling vacated as the head of Alphabet.

Schooling commented: “There is a steady erosion of the old
boundaries between fleet and personal leasing, and retail and
commercial finance channels.

“As a group, we are extremely well-placed to anticipate the effects
of these market changes with new developments to cater for the
emerging needs of fleets, employers, motor retailers and private
individuals.”

Sinclair added: “In 2008 [Alphabet] will continue to focus on
delivering high levels of customer service while ensuring our
relationships with customers are sustainable in every sense.”

Thomson Local deal
Alphabet announced it has won a contract to provide 480 company
cars for Thomson Local on a three-year, fully maintained contract
hire basis. Alphabet’s web-based reporting and quotation system
Alphabet Online was a “key factor” in winning the deal, the lessor
said.

“Online quoting and reporting, together with emailed updates,
are now an essential part of any fleet contract,” said Chris Field,
facilities manager for Thomson Local, a business directory firm
with over 1,000 staff. The fleet mainly comprises prestige cars, he
added.
