Automotive charity Ben has launched a mental health training programme in response to increase demand for help with mental health challenges.

The programme will see Ben work in partnership with employers to raise awareness about mental health, manage mental health in the workplace and provide practical tools for individuals to help them better manage their mental health.

It takes the form of a day training, involving a series of short classes for employees. These will be:

Training for managers

  • Managing mental health in the workplace

Masterclasses for employees

  • Coping with stress
  • Work, life, balance (coming soon)
  • Mindfulness for beginners (coming soon)

According to Ben, the training has already been successfully provided to some of Ben’s automotive industry partners.

The charity noted that mental health issues was the fastest growing issue in the industry in June this year, after it reported a surge in enquiries, and it already runs its own awareness campaign, Hats on 4 Mental Health. Ben received a 78% increase in requests for help from people about their mental health during 2016-17, compared to 2015-16.

The new training programme is part of ‘BenTraining’, part of the ‘Ben4Business’ package the charity launched in September. The other sections of Ben4Business are BenatWork, BenAware and Backing Ben.

It also said the training was a response to a government report, ‘Thriving at Work: a review of mental health and employers,’ which found that the UK faces a significant mental health challenge at work and that 300,000 people with a long-term medical health problem lose their jobs each year. That would equate to 8,000 people in the automotive industry.
